SEBA promotes an open and diverse international biogeographical community by assisting in sharing biogeographical information. Enhancing communication between biogeographers of all countries, SEBA contributes to the development of the theory and practice of Systematic and Evolutionary Biogeography.

SEBA is home to the International Code of Area Nomenclature (ICAN), a standardised system of biogeographical reference.

If you are interested in implementing, maintaining or discussing the International Code of Area Nomenclature you are encouraged to join and contribute to SEBA. You can also access the Biogeography Portal through this site.

SEBA is a Scientific Member of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS).

Chris Humphries – Natural History Museum, London (1947—2009)

Chris Humphries, botanist and biogeographer, died on Friday 31st July. Chris was a leading figure in the cladistic revolution in systematics and biogeography. He worked in the Botany Department of the Natural History Museum from 1972 until his retirement in 2007.
Chris was one of the first to explore, develop and promote cladistics in botany, examining classification and biogeography from its novel perspective. Chris produced a classic in biogeography, Cladistic Biogeography (1986) (with Lynne Parenti, of the Smithsonian; a revised 2nd edition appeared in 1999) and produced a widely read and used manual for cladistic systematics, Cladistics: A practical course in systematics (1992) (with staff of the Natural History Museum; a revised 2nd edition appeared in 1998 as Cladistics: the theory and practice of parsimony analysis).
Chris’s research extended from organizing and annotating the first complete full-colour edition of Banks’ Florilegium to addressing conservation issues with WorldMap (with Dick Vane-Wright and Paul Williams, both of the Entomology Department, NHM).

Prof. Pauline Y. Ladiges awarded Australia Day Honours

We are proud to announce that Prof. Pauline Y. Ladiges has been appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for services to the advancement of botanical science and research. Prof. Ladiges is also a member of the SEBA Council. On behalf of SEBA, congratulations!

Evolutionary Biogeography: A New Biogeography Book

ICAN and Argentine Fishes

The International Code of Area Nomenclature (ICAN) was recently used in a study of zoogeographic provinces in Argentina. The paper by López et al. (2008) was published in Journal of Biogeography. We provide the abstract and link to the article below:

"Aim To provide an objective geographic framework displaying the distribution patterns of freshwater fishes from Argentina.

Location Argentina, southern South America.

ICAN: Published in Journal of Biogeography

The International Code of Area Nomenclature (ICAN) has been published in the July issue of the Journal of Biogeography as a Guest Editorial. You can download it by clicking here or by contacting the authors.

The online version of the ICAN can be found here.

AINIC - Atlantic Islands Neogene, 2nd International Congress

The Marine PalaeoBiogeography Working Group (MPB) and the Instituto Português de Malacologia (IPM) will be jointly hosting the 2nd Atlantic Islands Neogene, International Congress (AINIC) and the 5th Congress of the European Malacological Societies (CEMS), to be held at Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island (Azores, Portugal) on 2-6 September 2008.

The Joint conference will include the following biogeographical themes:

ICAN: Online Early in Journal of Biogeography

The ICAN is published as an "online early" article on the Journal of Biogeography (JBI) website. For those with access to JBI, you can download it here.
For those with no JBI access, please ask the authors for a reprint.

ICAN Update

The International Code of Area Nomenclature (ICAN) has been used for the first time in an article by López et al. (2008) in the Journal of Biogeography.

The article uses the ICAN to describe a series of areas Argentina, including the Andean Cuyan and the Patagonian Provinces in the Andean Region, Austral Kingdom.
